Toxicity assessment of five emerging pollutants, alone and in binary or ternary mixtures, towards three aquatic organisms ArchiMer
Di Poi, Carole; Costil, Katherine; Bouchart, Valerie; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre.
Despite a growing scientific attention on ecological impact of emerging pollutants (EPs) such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and pesticides, knowledge gaps remain regarding mixture toxicity and effects on aquatic organisms. Several EPs were screened in seawater (Normandy, France), and the ecotoxicity of five compounds, chosen on their occurrence in ecosystems and use worldwide, was assessed and were the biocides methylparaben (MP) and triclosan (TCS), a pesticide degradation product (AMPA), and the pharmaceuticals venlafaxine (VEN) and carbamazepine (CBZ). The acute or sub-chronic toxicity, alone or in binary/ternary mixtures of three of them (CBZ, AMPA, and MP), was assessed on one marine and two freshwater organisms: Crassostrea gigas,...

Tradeoffs Between Water Quality and the Economic Impacts of Low-Input Agriculture in the Coastal Plain of Virginia AgEcon
Diebel, Penelope L.; Taylor, Daniel B.; Batie, Sandra S.; Heatwole, Conrad D..
Agricultural activities have been identified as major contributors to the non-point pollution of the Chesapeake Bay. Low-input agricultural practices are being considered to reduce pollution in areas adjoining the Chesapeake Bay. A multiperiod mathematical programming model was used to examine the potential adoption of low-input practices and to assess the environmental consequences of these activities under different policies. The results of these analyses indicate that tradeoffs exist among the types of non-point pollution produced under each policy. Only policies that retired productive agricultural land reduced all pollutant types.

UNITED STATES AND CANADIAN AGRICULTURAL HERBICIDE COSTS: IMPACTS ON NORTH DAKOTA FARMERS AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
Pesticides have become a major farm production cost over the past 25 years. There are price and label differences for agricultural herbicides between the United States and Canada. Trade names are different in some cases, label restrictions vary, and weights and measures are different. The reasons for the price differences are unclear. Whether they are due to increased costs in labeling requirements, different levels of competition and use, or market segmentation is not determined. The largest total impact of using lower priced Canadian herbicide is on HRSW, followed by durum and corn. The largest per acre impact is for canola, corn, and HRSW. Herbicides with the largest total impact are Puma, followed by Roundup and Fargo. Net farm income for large,...

Use of Herbicides in Sugarcane in the São Paulo State Planta Daninha
REIS,F.C.; VICTÓRIA FILHO,R.; ANDRADE,M.T.; BARROSO,A.A.M..
ABSTRACT: Sugarcane is one of the main agricultural cultivations of Brazil, and one of the crops in which herbicides are most applied. In the 2017/2018 season, the estimated sugarcane production was 694.54 million tons, with an estimated increase of 0.9% in yield for this season. In order to evaluate the use of herbicides in this crop in the São Paulo State during a five-year period, a survey was carried out with sugarcane farmers. The use of herbicides applied alone and in a formulated mixture, according to their mechanism of action, were evaluated from 2010 to 2014. Photosystem II inhibitor herbicides were the most used in this period and the total amount of herbicides of almost all mechanism of action increased from 2010 to 2014, except for photosystem...

USE OF REMOTELY PILOTED AIRCRAFTS FOR THE APPLICATION OF PLANT PROTECTION PRODUCTS REA
Cunha,João P. A. R. da; Alvarenga,Cleyton B. de; Rinaldi,Paula C. N.; Marques,Matheus G.; Zampiroli,Renan.
ABSTRACT The use of remotely piloted aircrafts (RPAs) to apply plant protection products has grown a lot in agriculture worldwide. However, little research data are available regarding the efficiency and safety of this method, especially in Brazil. Thus, this review aimed to present the current scenario of scientific research involving RPAs in the application of pesticides. Several factors interfere with the quality of this type of application. Among them are height and flight speed, droplet generator elements, application rate, and spray solution properties. In general, applications have been performed between 1.0 m and 3.0 m of height and 1.0 m s-1 and 7.0 m s-1 of speed. As for the droplet generator element, there is still no clarity as to the ideal...

Uso de defensivos agrícolas, limites máximos de resíduos e impacto no comércio internacional: estudo de caso AgEcon
Fermam, Ricardo Kropf Santos; Antunes, Adelaide Maria de Souza.
Pesticides play an important role in agriculture, prevent loses by pests which destroy cultures and causes several damages to producers and to exporting countries of agriculture products. However, pesticides leave residues where they are used. A parameter used for residue quantification is known Maximum Residue Limit (MRL). This parameter is the most important, not only in terms of public health, but mainly international trade, causing many impacts that can represent, in some cases, barriers to trade between countries, especially when established values for a country differ from those established by international organizations. The present Article show how this parameter impacts agriculture products´ trade of developing countries, based on case study.

Validation of a liquid chromatography ultraviolet method for determination of herbicide diuron and its metabolites in soil samples Anais da ABC (AABC)
FELICIO,ANA LUCIA S.M.; MONTEIRO,ALESSANDRA M.; ALMEIDA,MARIANA B.; MADEIRA,TIAGO B.; NIXDORF,SUZANA L.; YABE,MARIA JOSEFA S..
ABSTRACT Diuron is one of the most widely herbicide used worldwide, which can undergo degradation producing three primary metabolites: 3,4-dichlorophenylurea, 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methylurea, and 3,4-dichloroaniline. Since the persistence of diuron and its by-products in ecosystems involves risk of toxicity to environment and human health, a reliable quantitative method for simultaneous monitoring of these compounds is required. Hence, a simple method without preconcentration step was validated for quantitation of diuron and its main metabolites by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Separation was achieved in less than 11 minutes using a C18 column, mobile phase composed of acetonitrile and water (45:55 v/v) at 0.86 mL...

Why farmers continue to use pesticides despite environmental health and sustainability costs AgEcon
Wilson, Clevo; Tisdell, Clement A..
Use of chemical inputs such as pesticides have increased agricultural production and productivity. However, negative externalities, too, have increased. The externalities include damage to the environment, agricultural land, fisheries, fauna and flora. Another major externality has been the unintentional destruction of beneficial predators of insects which has led to a virulence of many species of agricultural pests. Mortality and morbidity among agricultural workers, especially in developing countries from exposure to pesticides, are also common. The costs from these externalities are large and affect farmers’ returns. However, despite these high costs, farmers continue to use pesticides and in increasing quantities. In this paper, we examine this...
